Ageing Well
Occupational Therapy

Stay safe, independent and doing the things that matter to you

Sometimes the everyday things that once felt simple start becoming harder

You may be feeling less steady on your feet. Showering or getting around the house may not feel as safe as it once did. You might be recovering after illness or hospitalisation, adjusting to changes in your health, or wondering whether some simple equipment or changes around the home could make life easier.

Our occupational therapists work with older adults and their families to find practical ways to make everyday life safer, easier and more independent.

We provide occupational therapy in Mudgee and surrounding communities, including outreach to rural areas.

You might benefit from occupational therapy if…

  • You’re worried about falls or feeling less steady at home

  • Getting in and out of the shower, bed, chair or car is becoming difficult

  • Everyday activities are taking more effort than they used to

  • You’re unsure what equipment might make daily life easier

  • You’re considering grab rails, ramps or other home modifications

  • You’ve recently come home from hospital and things aren’t quite working as well as before

  • You’re supporting an older parent or family member and wondering what might help them stay independent

  • Your care team has recommended an occupational therapy assessment

How an occupational therapist can help

Our occupational therapists look at the person, the activities they need and want to do, and the environment around them.

Depending on your needs, we may help with:

  • Home safety and falls prevention

  • Identifying risks around the home and practical ways to improve safety and confidence.

  • Everyday independence

  • Finding strategies to make tasks such as showering, dressing, cooking, moving around the home and getting out into the community easier.

  • Assistive technology and equipment

  • Assessing and recommending equipment that supports safety, mobility and independence.

  • Home modifications

  • Assessing your home and recommending changes such as grab rails, ramps or other modifications to improve accessibility and safety.

  • Functional assessment

  • Understanding how changes in health, mobility, cognition or function are affecting everyday life and identifying practical supports

  • Support for families and carers

  • Helping families understand what may make daily life safer and more manageable for everyone involved.

Support at Home and aged care funding

Occupational therapy is included within Australia’s Support at Home program, which aims to help older people remain living safely and independently at home for longer.

Depending on your assessment and funding, occupational therapy may also support access to assistive technology and home modifications.

If you’re not sure whether occupational therapy is included in your current aged care supports, speak with your care partner or contact our team and we can help you understand the next step.

Local support, closer to home

Together Thriving is based in Mudgee and provides occupational therapy to older adults across the Central West.

We understand that accessing allied health services can be difficult in rural communities, so we are developing outreach services to surrounding towns and communities.

Contact us to discuss availability in your area.

Not sure if occupational therapy is what you need?

You don’t need to know exactly what service to ask for.

Tell us what’s becoming difficult, what you’re worried about, or what you’d like to keep doing.

We can help work out whether occupational therapy may be useful and what the next step could look like.
